Protecting Niger’s Irreplaceable Wildlife

With your help, we seek to continue our work with communities and protected area managers in Niger to:

  • safeguard genetically distinct and irreplaceable populations of some of the world’s rarest species, and
  • sustain critical conservation landscapes and the benefits they provide for the people that depend on them.

Why Niger?

Niger is one of the world’s least developed countries but has a wealth of natural beauty and irreplaceable wildlife heritage that needs support in current times.
Funding for conservation and related capacity building has been significantly squeezed during the last two years to the impending detriment of wildlife, wild places and the rural communities that depend on nature.

Why Sahara Conservation?

As a result of declining external support for Niger’s wildlife, the Sahara Conservation Niger team has never been in so much demand. The messages we receive from communities and from the local and national authorities responsible for nature conservation shows that our enduring presence as a trusted partner for over 15 years is greatly appreciated. Hence, earlier this year, we signed a new partnership agreement with the Directorate of Wildlife, Hunting and Protected Areas. Because of our talented Niger team, our track record and productive relationships, we are well placed to make a positive difference.

Building on local motivation

We are heartened by the will and desire of communities to conserve wildlife and enhance the natural environment. In 2024 alone, stakeholders met to conceive a new action plan for the conservation of dama gazelles in the Aïr and Ténéré National Nature Reserve and create a fresh strategy for the conservation of North African ostriches. Meanwhile, there are great examples of communities seeking to create local nature reserves and tackle issues such as plastics in the environment. We are also experiencing a groundswell of people engaging in critical issues such as the importance of protecting vultures because of their critical role in human, livestock and ecosystem health. We believe this is an important time to be supporting grassroots conservation initiatives that restore ecosystems, improve the state of the environment and protect highly threatened species.
