Together, let’s protect the Scimitar-horned Oryx

More than two decades ago, the Scimitar-horned Oryx was declared Extinct in the Wild, having completely disappeared from its natural habitat. Thanks to a monumental international effort and the ongoing work of Sahara Conservation and its partners, more than 600 oryx now roam freely in Chad’s Ouadi Rimé–Ouadi Achim Faunal Reserve.
This achievement is remarkable, but much still remains to be done. The species remains listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and requires ongoing monitoring and protection to ensure its long-term survival.

The challenges today

To strengthen the reintroduction and secure the long-term survival of the species, constant vigilance and action are essential.
Every day, Sahara Conservation relies on advanced monitoring tools – GPS collars, satellite tracking, and field observations – to follow and protect the oryx. They give us precious data and a precise understanding of oryx movements and behaviour, allowing rapid intervention in case of danger (wildfires, disease, predation, etc.).
This data guides our teams in the field and informs our ongoing conservation strategies to maintain a healthy and viable population.
But this ongoing work cannot continue without support.

This Giving Tuesday, your support matters more than ever

Your donation has a direct impact:

  • $60: One month of GPS collar airtime subscription, essential to track oryx movements and detect danger quickly.
  • $115: One hour of wildfire control, one of the most devastating threats to the species and its habitat.
  • $290: Essential equipment for the daily monitoring of reintroduced or wild-born individuals (binoculars, rangefinders, cameras, etc.).
  • $4,400: A GPS collar and one-year airtime subscription, enabling precise long-distance monitoring and immediate action when a threat arises.

Every donation strengthens monitoring, protects habitat, and ensures the return of
the Scimitar-horned Oryx to the Sahara remains a lasting success.
