2024 Sahel & Sahara Interest Group meeting – Registration is open!

The Sahel & Sahara Interest Group was born in 2000 on the back of a meeting organized by the Convention on Migratory Species in Djerba, Tunisia, to adopt an action plan for endangered Sahelo-Saharan antelopes as a response to the alarming extinction crisis facing the wildlife of the region. Since then, the meeting has become an annual forum bringing together hundreds of conservation practitioners and organizations to share their work on Sahelian and Saharan species and habitats, and creating a unique and powerful network of actors from all walks of society and from all range states.

Facilitated by Sahara Conservation, the meeting is a unique opportunity to bring people together to share ideas and projects, and to continue a strong tradition of collaboration on behalf of Sahelo-Saharan wildlife and people.

The meeting will be hosted by our Moroccan partners from the Agence Nationale des Eaux et Forêts in Agadir, Morocco, and facilitated by Sahara Conservation from April 30 to May 2.

  • The regional context: understanding the influence of climate change, geopolitics, security, and socio-economics on the state of nature.
  • Enhancing impact: resourcing, leadership capacity, governance, and grass-roots conservation.
  • Sustaining ecosystems: models for effective protected area and landscape management.
  • Ecosystem health: complementary approaches for people, animals and the environment.
  • Restoring species: the biology, management and recovery of threatened species.
  • Human-wildlife coexistence: interactions and community engagement.
